During the 2017-2018 school year, BCE participated in SBISD's Redesign Collaborative, which offered us the opportunity to get feedback from our stakeholders - students, parents, teachers, staff, and community - on their experiences at our school. Through this work, the Redesign Team selected five Graduate Aims each BCE student should possess when they leave our campus - Critical Thinker, Complex Problem Solver, Goal Driven, Curious Learner, and Empathetic Citizen. In order to assist our students develop these 21st Century skills during the school day, the Redesign Team chose four "Signature Experiences" to provide our students learning opportunities.
- Morning Menu: Students choose an activity to participate in from 7:00 - 7:20 a.m. These activities include breakfast, computer lab, library, walking the track, goal setting, and intervention. The goal is to increase students' motivation for learning during the day by providing them the opportunity to choose, take initiative, and be in control of their decisions. The menu begins in late August, rolling out to 5th graders first; eventually, lower grades will be added to the morning menu.
- Inquiry-Based Learning: Teachers will create units of study that integrate Language Arts, Science, and Social Studies, which will involve students in their learning, have them ask essential questions, investigate, and build new understanding, meaning, and knowledge. K-2nd will implement IBL during this school year.
- Community Circle: This is a class meeting which builds and strengthens student-student and student-teacher relationships. Students sit in a circle on the ground to share their thoughts and feelings for the day or about a certain topic. In order to achieve success, everyone must follow the following rules: Appreciation of Others (i.e., no put-downs), Listen Attentively, Mutual Respect, and the Right to Pass (students can pass when it is their turn).
- Goal Setting: Students in K-5th grade will learn to set goals and monitor their progress using tracking sheets.
